How To Renew A Uk Passport

How To Renew A Uk Passport

There are four different ways of renewing a passport when you are in the UK

Postal service

This is the most commonly used service, applicants can pick an application up from most post offices in the UK or alternatively they can fill out an on-line application and get it pre-printed and sent to their home address for the required signatures. The applicant then sends the form along with the supporting documentation to a regional office in their catchment area (there will be an envelope already addressed to the office in their application pack).

The passport application will then be processed at the passport office and providing there are no complications will be sent back to the customer by secure courier service in around 2 or 3 weeks. Please note this is not a guaranteed time scale and cannot be depended on. The supporting documents such as old passport and birth/marriage certificates are sent back by second class post, however there is an option on the application form if the customer wishes to pay £3 to have them returned by secure courier service.

To track a postal application the applicant can take down the bar-code reference number, this is contained on the front of the application under the word PASS and a bar-code they can then phone the advice-line or use the website, details listed at the bottom of this article.

The cost of this service is £77.50 for an adult renewal and £49.00 for a child and can be paid by credit or debit card using the mandate in the application guidance booklet. Other methods that can be used are cheque and postal orders made payable to Identity and Passport Service.

Post office – check and send service

This service is highly recommended by the identity and passport service. It involves the applicant filling out the form the same way as the postal service, they would then bring the form along with the supporting documents to a post office that offers the check and send service. The post office clerk will then check over the application making sure all the correct sections are filled in and done correctly, they will then check the supporting documents are correct. They will send everything off to the regional office by special delivery.

The post office advise this service normally takes around 14 days for a renewal however again this cannot be guaranteed and anyone wishing to travel urgently are advised to use the fast track or premium services.

Another point to note is that the post office clerk will provide the customer with a receipt that contains a bar-code reference number, the customer can track the application on-line using the website or the advice-line.

This service costs £85.67 for an adult renewal and £57.17 for a child. Payments are made in full to the post office and can be paid for by cash, cheques made payable to Post Office Ltd. or by credit/debit card.

Fast Track

This is a guaranteed one week service. Like the other services the applicant will complete an application that can be collected from the post office or filled in on-line and sent out. The customer will then book an appointment at a regional passport office. The only way of doing this is by phoning the advice line on 0300 222 0000. The regional offices are situated in the following places. Belfast, Glasgow, Durham, Liverpool, Peterborough, London and Newport (Gwent).

The applicant will then go along to the passport office for an appointment, the appointments can last up to half an hour but normally are a lot quicker, after the appointment they will leave the office and will receive their passport within a guaranteed week by secure courier service.

Office opening hours are 9-5 mon-fri and 9-3 on saturdays.  (hours subject to change)

Please note the applicant does not have to attend the appointment, if they write a letter of consent for someone else to go on their behalf this is also allowed as long as the person going brings two forms of ID for themselves one which must include a photograph. In the case of a child the parent who signed section 9 would attend, if they are unable then a letter of consent is also accepted.

This service is appointment only and costs £112.50 for an adult and £96.50 for a child. Payments are made on the day of the appointment by cash, credit/debit card or cheques made payable to Identity and Passport service.

Premium service

This service is the most efficient service for renewal of a UK passport. Like the fast track service the customer will book and appointment at a regional passport office using the advice-line.

The customer will be required to bring the application pack and documents along for a short appointment. They will then leave the office and can return any time after 4 hours to collect the passport. If the customer wants to do it all in the same day because of office hours they must have an appointment in the morning unless its at the London office as its collections office is open until 9pm mon-fri. The latest that an applicant can have a premium appointment in London is 15.45.

The letter must state that the applicant gives permission for the attendee to go to the appointment on their behalf and also to collect the passport.

This service is appointment only and costs £129.50 for an adult and £109.50 for a child. Payments are made on the day of the appointment by cash, credit/debit card or cheques made payable to Identity and Passport service.
