There was a time when Matthew McConaughey was considered “€ just one of Hollywood’€™s pretty faces”€™. He played a great romantic lead in romantic-comedies and looked great when he took his shirt off which ensured a lot of female audience members would be keen to buy tickets. In fact going shirtless in a film became McConaughey’€™s trademark.
Matthew David McConaughey was born on the 4th November 1969 in Uvalde, Texas. His father, James Donald McConaughey, was a petrol station owner and a former NFL footballer who played for the Green Bay Packers, and his mother, Mary Kathleen, was a school teacher.
By the time McConaughey attended high school his family had moved to Longview, Texas, so he attended Longview High School before he signed up to be an exchange student and traveled to New South Wales in Australia for twelve months. Originally McConaughey wanted to be a lawyer but after reading “€œThe Greatest Salesman In The World”€ he decided to become an actor so attended the University of Texas in Austin and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Radio-Television-Film.
Upon graduating McConaughey acted in several television commercials and also took an interest in student films. Not only did he act in a few but also directed one of his film, a short film called “€ Chicano Chariots”€™.
Soon McConaughey landed a small role in the television series “€ Unsolved Mysteries”€™, in a Trisha Yearwood music video and the feature film “€ My Boyfriend’€™s Back”€™ and then came his big break. By chance he met casting director/producer Don Phillips in an Austin bar. Phillips then introduced McConaughey to director Richard Linklater who quickly spoke to the young star about appearing in his new film “€ Dazed And Confused”€™. However, Linklater thought there was a problem, he believed that McConaughey was too “€ attractive’€™ to play a man chasing high school girls, however McConaughey solved the problem by “€ scruffing”€™ himself up a little and the role became his.
On the back of the positive reviews that “€ Dazed And Confused”€™ attracted McConaughey soon found himself scoring roles in films like “€ Angels In The Outfield.” “€ The Return Of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”€™, “€ Boys On The Side” and “€ Glory Daze”€™.
The experience of working on such big films started to grow the “€ McConaughey”€™ reputation and soon Hollywood producers decided that it was time for him to become a leading man. His first leading role came in the Robert Zemeckis directed “€ Contact”€™ in which he starred alongside Jodie Foster. He was then cast by Steven Spielberg in “€ Amistad”€™.
While McConaughey was building a career as a dramatic actor he soon found himself being cast in romantic comedies, such as “€ The Wedding Planner”€™ and ‘€ How To Lose A Guy In 10 Guys”€™ and hence he was soon being considered one of Hollywood’s most attractive romantic leads. Roles in “€ Sahara”€™ and “€ Fool’€™s Gold”€™ also had him being referred to as an action romantic actor.
After receiving critical acclaim for his role in “€ Tropic Thunder”€™, a role McConaughey scored after Own Wilson sadly tried to kill himself, it was obvious that McConaughey once again wanted to be taken seriously as an actor. His roles in “€ The Lincoln Lawyer”€™, “€ Bernie”€™ and “€ Killer Joe”€™ again saw him land even more praise from critics.
Then came 2012 perhaps the biggest year in both McConaughey’€™s personal and professional lives. On June 9th McConaughey married his partner, Brazilian model Camila Alves (whom he has three children with) but was also cast in the films “€ Mud”€™, “€ The Paperboy” and ‘€ Magic Mike”€™… the latter being a role that many feel he should be nominated for an Oscar for as he played a troubled stripper named Dallas.
From “€ pretty boy actor”€™ to one of Hollywood’€™s most talented dramatic actors, Matthew McConaughey is finally receiving the recognition he deserves.
