If you are celebrating a special romantic occasion, you have a car and $500 to spend, you might want to consider this!
Start the celebration in North New Jersey at the Harbor Bar – water-front dining, Lincoln Harbor on Hudson River: http://www.harborbar.com/ . This place has some great views, and some fine drinks. Sit outside…
Next day, leave early for Rhode Island. Before checking into the Marriot Courtyard in Warwick, RI, spend some time in Providence and check out Brown University. Just for $10 more, choose a spa room at the Marriot to enjoy the amazing jacuuuzi right in the room itself!
Drive through small towns such as Warren to get to Newport, RI, (http://www.gonewport.com/) which gives you a feeling that you are not in the USA. Spent the afternoon around the Newport waterfront strip on Thames St. For a quick bite, consider the Roll-your-Own Burrito Shop – – definitely recommended for the veggies…Have a drink at The Pier. Some of those drinks are strong, so be careful!
Drive an hour west if you want a break from the crowd and want the serene. Lots of little towns on Route 95…we chose Westerly on the border of Connecticut and Rhode Island where the River Glow Festival was on…where we saw bonfires in the water. Some people like the Mystic Seaport, others choose to be closer to Newport…maybe, at the Mohigan Sun in the opposite direction. Grab a coffee from local stores, visit the antiques or unique stores. Choose your pick.
Back in Warwick in the night? Go to the Thai restaurant, 5 blocks from the Marriot..fantastic food. Ask at the counter for directions.
Next day, head back to Newport to see the mansions..http://www.newportmansions.org/page7016.cfm Check out the Vanderbilt mansion called the Breakers for a fee.. Bike around, get a scooter or a little green two-seater on wheels – all of which is fun. On your way back, pick up an Italian Gelato…
Head back West on 95 toward NYC. Stop over at the Gateway of India restaurant in Old Saybrook for dinner, drive around the pretty Essex Village, shop at factory outlets in Clinton, discover Route 15 that runs parallel to 95, and to avoid traffic, take Tappan Zee bridge instead of G.W.
That’s just 36 hours of traveling, only 3 hours from North Jersey…but it’s packed and full of fun!
A great holiday, if you want to ever try it out!
