So want to catch up on Courtney Love?
Known mostly for her rock band Hole and marriage to Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love knows exactly who she has created, independent woman, controversial rock star, Hollywood Starlet, successful author and sex icon! This article will take you back to when Courtney was just another little girl with a big dream. Sit back; hold tight, you’re in for a rough ride!
On July 9th 1964 Linda Carroll and Hank Harrison gave birth to Courtney Michelle Harrison. The couple were blessed with the gift they had been given, but their happiness was short lived. It wasn’t long until Carroll and Hank were filing for divorce. In attempts to win Courtney in the case, Linda and her friend told the court that Hank had given Courtney LSD when she was only four years old. To this day no one knows if this claim is true however Linda got full custody of her daughter either way. Courtney’s mother remarried three times dragging Courtney from home to home, family to family. I believe this had an effect on Courtney as she was kicked out of many of her schools. Some teacher’s reports say that she was a very creative and intelligent pupil but had a bad attitude and disruptive behaviour. In 1973 Linda Carroll flew her family and her new husband off to Newzealand, leaving a nine year old Courtney behind with a therapist. After the family had settled in to their new life in a farm house in Newzealand Courtney was invited over to the country to stay in a boarding school, Courtney “the trouble child” would never be joined with her family again. While in the boarding school Courtney used poetry as her escape route and would write through her troubles. At around the age of twelve Courtney was back in the U.S and applied to the “Mickey Mouse Club” (a kid’s talent show responsible for Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake) in her audition she read a poem by Sylvia Plath. The club wrote to Courtney stating
“Since Showtime will feature youngsters who have exceptional singing, dancing or musical ability, with a marked degree of performance experience, we regret that you do not qualify”
Now determined to make it in Hollywood Courtney tried harder. She wanted to be famous. Through her teenage years Courtney was passed through children’s homes, Juvenile Halls and foster homes. It was during this time that Courtney turned to Punk Rock. At 15 Courtney got emancipated from her parents and used her freedom to travel around the USA, Ireland and the UK. When in Liverpool, England Courtney dated and moved in with Julian Cope and went to rock shows with him. After the relationship’s demise Courtney headed back to the states in her pursuit for fame. During this time Courtney had romances with Rozz Rezabek and Michael Mooney.
Still waiting on her American Dream Courtney headed to Japan where she worked in numerous strip joints. One of which refused to let Courtney go and denied her, her passport. When Courtney turned 22 she decided to give America another chance and moved back to Portland. During this time Courtney became involved with Falling James Moreland and got married to him “as a joke” the marriage was soon annulled. Courtney befriended many future rock stars at this point in her life including, Michael Stipe of R.E.M., Jeff Buckley and Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins.
Pretty dull so far? Surely Courtney deserves some romance.
The year was 1989 when Courtney met Kurt Cobain, at a Butthole Surfers concert. The couple fell in love in 1991. Let’s skip to, February 24, 1992 when in a private ceremony on a Hawaii beach, Love and Cobain got married married. Later that year the couple were blessed with their daughter, Francis Bean Cobain. She got her middle name of her father, who said she looked like a bean on the first scan. The newlywed’s happiness was briefly disrupted when Social Services removed Francis from their care after Courtney said she had “stopped using heroin once she had learned she was pregnant”.
April 8, 1994, a week before the release of Hole’s smash hit album, Live Through This. Kurt was found lying dead in the Green House of the families Seattle mansion. Kurt was discovered by a security man who had come to install lights on the property. After realising Kurt was in serious trouble he called for the ambulance. Authorities ruled the cause of death as suicide by shot gun wound to the head. The Coroner also found four times the lethal dosage of Heroin in Cobain’s blood stream. Now a single mother Courtney went back to work to support her daughter, work being her internationally successful rock/grunge band Hole. On June 16, 1994 bassist Kristen Pfaff was found dead in her bath tub, an apparent drug overdose. Courtney had lost her husband and her band mate in the space of two months. She strived on. Melissa Auf Der Maur was Hole’s new bassist and the revamped band went on to produce their third album, Celebrity Skin. Rolling Stone gave the album four stars, saying “the album teems with sonic knockouts that make you see all sorts of stars. It’s accessible, fiery and intimate often at the same time. Here is a basic guitar record that’s anything but basic.” Some of the tracks on the album were co written by Courtney Love and Billy Corgan. Next up… The Pretty Monsters tour.
Hole joined forces with Marilyn Manson and toured for a short while. The happiness was short lived; the two bands mocked each other on stage and argued over production costs. Hole later dropped out.
Hole’s last song was “Be a Man” the band split and Courtney went solo whilst Melissa joined The Smashing pumpkins before going it alone.
Courtney’s solo debut was titled “America’s Sweetheart” and unfortunately didn’t sell as well as expected. This was due to demons Courtney was facing at this point in her life, drug use had landed her in a nasty financial state, her daughter had been taken off her and she was in and out of Court and rehab. She lost a lot of respect and was constantly in the tabloids. However Courtney shocked us all again by dragging herself up from rock bottom. She sold some of her late husband’s diary entries to publishers and used the money to build a stable environment for Francis and herself. During this time Courtney produced a manga series “princess Ai” which translates to “princess love”. This series shows a misfit girl who appears in Tokyo in a “heart shaped box” and shows her troubled journey in the music biz. She is now working on her second solo album “How Dirty Girls Get Clean” and has been sober for over six months. A documentary of the making of this long awaited album, “The Return of Courtney Love” was aired on British Television Network “More 4” on September 27th 2006. The show was written and narrated by Will Yapp and previewed some material from the new album! Courtney recently released her first book “The Diaries of Courtney Love: Dirty Blonde” which showcases her diary entries, poems, letters and pictures from child hood, puberty and womanhood. Courtney is rumoured to appear in the 2008 movie production “Lovelace” where she will play “Linda Lovelace”. This movie can sit proudly with helped make her the Hollywood A-Lister she is today such as; Sid and Nancy, Straight to hell, Tapehead, Feeling Minnesota, The people VS Larry Flynt, Man on the moon and 200 cigarettes.
Well, I hope you enjoyed the ride. However tragic, exciting and controversial Courtney’s life is, it has made her who she is, Rock god, Model, Actress, but most of all, Courtney Love.
