Sir Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947 in Pinner Middlesex to parents Stanley and Sheila Dwight. As a very young child Elton John began his love for music and he began playing the piano by ear at age 3 and at age 7 he began taking lessons. When Elton was only 11 years old, he won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. Elton John attended Saturday afternoon classes at the academy for the next five years. Elton John’s father tried to dissuade his son from music and was a bit of a firm man while his mother was not as strict, they had married when Elton had been six years old and by the time he turned 14 they had divorced. Elton and his mother moved when his mother married her second husband, Fred Farebrother, whom Elton genuinely liked. Elton John would remain living in this same London Flat for a good many years at the beginning of his career and moved on only after he had four albums simultaneously appearing in America’s top 40.
When Elton and his mother first moved to the London Flat she assisted her son in his musical career by getting him in the door of a local pub where he would play the piano on the weekends. He was simply known as Reggie back then and he even took a turn as a member of a local band called “The Corvettes” though that didn’t last too long. In 1964 he formed another group called “Bluesology” and he played with them for the next several years. In 1966 “Bluesology played warm up for musician Long John Baldry. The name Elton John was born due to two important men in his life at the time the “John” came from Long John Baldry and the “Elton” came as a sort of homage to friend and saxophonist for “Bluesology” Elton Dean.
Elton John auditioned for several big name bands in the late sixties such as “Gentle Giant” and “King Crimson” but he didn’t get in to them. He answered an advertisement around this same time for New Musical Express and the relationship between Elton John, music writer and lyric writer Bernie Taupin was born. Taupin wrote many of the lyrics to Elton John’s top hits and their relationship still goes strong today.
Through the years Elton John has gone on to become a beloved mega-superstar and has written and sung dozens and dozens of hit songs. In the earlier days of his career, Elton made a few unwise choices and battled both drugs and alcohol before coming out on top. In 1993, he met and began dating David Furnish and in December of 2005 the duo made it official. On December 25, 2010 Elton and David’s son Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John was born and the duo named famous pop singer Lady Gaga as Godmother.
