Italian Stallion Cocktail

Italian Stallion Cocktail

If you are looking for a great drink to serve before dinner as a cocktail hour treat, the Italian Stallion cocktail makes a great choice. It refrains from being overly sweet, so no one will have to worry about it tasting (or looking) too “girly”, and it contains a nice potency that will relax the drinker without sending them over the edge before a meal.

This mixture of Angostura bitters, bourbon, Campari, and sweet vermouth is a playful but downplayed cocktail, one that is excellent for a palate cleanser or as a nice choice when out on the town. The Campari tends to be the best part, with its bittersweet flavor and wonderfully mysterious composition, so be sure to really savor this drink!

To cross over from amateur to professional bartender, a great little trick is to twist the lemon garnish over the prepared drink. This releases some of the essence of the lemon into the mixture. It is a subtle little touch, but the things like that can make all the difference when it comes to making an impression and serving a truly memorable cocktail.

4 to 6 ice cubes, cracked
Dash of Angostura bitters
2 measures bourbon
1 measure Campari
½ measure sweet vermouth
Twist of fresh lemon peel, for garnish

Chill a cocktail glass. Set it aside while preparing the drink. In a mixing glass, put the cracked ice cubes and add a dash of Angostura bitters. Pour in the bourbon, Campari, and sweet vermouth, and stir the mixture vigorously until it is well mixed. Strain the mixture from the mixing glass into the chilled cocktail glass. Garnish the drink by making a twist of lemon directly over the cocktail, then decorate the drink with the twist. Serve and enjoy!
