Piers Stefan Pughe-Morgan, better known to the viewing public simply as Piers Morgan, is a distinguished editor-turned-Hollywood star. Morgan appeared as a judge in several reality shows including Britain’s Got Talent and America’s Got Talent.

The 45-year-old writer is also the winner of The Celebrity Apprentice, the seventh season of the highly popular US television series The Apprentice. Currently, Morgan hosts his own show for CNN, Piers Morgan Tonight.

Early Life

Morgan was born on March 30 1965 in Surrey, England to Vincent and Gabrielle O’Meara. Morgan was just one year old when his father died. Hence, his mother remarried.

Morgan and his three siblings were raised and educated at Surrey by their mother and stepfather. Moreover, upon finishing his secondary education, Morgan attended the prestigious Harlow College in Essex where he studied Journalism.

Writing Career

Morgan worked briefly for various London-based newspaper publications including the South London News and the Streatham and Tooting News. His biggest break came when he was recruited by media executive and editor Kelvin MacKenzie to write for the Sun, particularly to work for the Bizarre column.

In 1994, the then promising 28-year-old journalist was appointed as the editor of The News of the World, a tabloid-style publication and Sunday sister paper of the Sun.

Shortly afterwards, Morgan gained notoriety for his reckless, no-nonsense style of reporting celebrity gossips and rumors. Morgan left The News of the World and accepted a higher-paying editor position at the Daily Mirror. Morgan became a controversial figure during his tenure as editor of the Mirror. In 2000, he was accused of having breached the Code of Conduct on financial journalism. Reportedly, Morgan bought £20,000 worth of shares of the computer company Viglen – just before the Mirror published an article advising that shares of Viglen were a great buy.

Television Career

Morgan’s early television career was limited to documentaries and current affairs show. Moreover, Morgan’s television career skyrocketed during his stint as a judge for the reality talent show, America’s Got Talent.

Morgan also served as a judge for Britain’s Got Talent. Morgan starred in several other shows as part of the stipulations under a reported £2 million golden handcuffs deal with ITV.

Morgan currently hosts a variety show Piers Morgan Tonight for CNN. Morgan is widely criticized for being “arrogant” and “too full of himself.” Nevertheless, the witty talk show host remains one of the most watched and controversial personalities in the entertainment industry.
